Where do I go if I need food?
Mobile Foodshare distributes in town on a weekly basis. All you have to do is show up at one of the set distribution sites and times bring your own bag and go through the line. Both perishable and non-perishable products are usually distributed.
The Friendship Center (Soup Kitchen). The Friendship Center, located in the basement of St. John’s Episcopal Church at 12 Rector Street (corner of Main Street and Burnside Avenue), serves dinner at 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and 2:00 p.m. on Sundays. All you have to do is show up.
East Hartford residents may register to use the “Combined Churches of East Hartford Emergency Food Bank”. This is for emergencies only. To register you must come to the Social Services Department during business hours and provide: a photo ID (drivers license, state ID card, etc.), proof of East Hartford residence (utility bill mailed to you at your current address, copy of your lease, etc.), Social Security card, birth dates of everybody in your household, proof of all monthly gross household income (including Social Security, pension, child support and alimony), DSS budget sheet (if receiving).

Where do I go if I need help paying for my oil or other heating bills?
Contact the Community Renewal Team (CRT) at 560-5800 and apply for the Energy Assistance Program.
Limited Energy Assistance may be available through the Social Services Department, after a CRT decision has been made. Contact the department at 291-7295 for details.

Where do I go if I need Emergency Shelter?
The East Hartford Community Shelter, run by CRT, is located at 385 Main Street, East Hartford. They provide emergency shelter to men, women and children. They can be reached by calling 568-0323. If no space is available at this location, their staff will work with you to locate other available shelter beds.

What documents do I need to bring with me when applying for one of the Social Service Divisions Programs?
Most of the town programs require a photo ID for the applicant (driver’s license, state ID card, etc.), proof of East Hartford residence (current bill mailed to you at your address, copy of your lease, etc.), Social Security cards for everybody in your household, birth dates of every in your household, long form birth certificates for all minor children (under age 18), copy of custody papers or proof of guardianship for all minor children residing in the household without a biological parent at the same residence, proof of all monthly gross household income (including Social Security, pension, child support and alimony), DSS budget sheet (if receiving). However, you should contact the department for specific requirements for each program.
