*Where do we apply for a marriage license or a civil union license?
All couples planning to be married or planning to have a civil union who live in East Hartford must apply for a license either at the town where their ceremony is to occur, or at their town of residence.
*Is there a waiting period?
No.
*How long is the license good for?
The license is good for 65 days from the date of application.
*How much does it cost?
The license fee is $30.00 cash or check (made payable to Town Clerk - East Hartford).
*What are your hours?
The Town Clerk's Office is open Monday-Wednesday and on Fridays from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and it is open Thursdays 8:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
*What do we need to bring in?
Identification must be shown. A driver’s license is helpful. Divorce papers are not required.
*How can I find a Justice of the Peace?
The Town Clerk's Office maintains a list of East Hartford Justices of the Peace who perform marriages and/or civil unions.
*Can we get married or have our civil union at the Town Hall?
Town Hall personnel do not perform weddings or civil unions. You may make arrangements with the Justice of the Peace to choose a convenient location. Local parks are available.
*Can we use our marriage or civil union license in a different town?
No. The license may only be used within the town it is issued for. The process must be done over if you decide to get married or have a civil union in another town.
*Should we notify Social Security about the wedding?
Call 1-800-772-1213 for the proper forms if the bride is going to change her name (Note: Social Security does not charge for this service).
SUMMARY OF REQUIREMENTS
*Apply for a marriage license or civil union license within 65 days of the ceremony in the Town Clerk's Office in the town where the marriage/civil union will take place or the town where you live.
*Both parties to the marriage or civil union must come into the Town Clerk's Office to take an oath and sign the license.
*Names, birth dates, birthplaces, parents' names (including mother's maiden name) and their birthplaces are requested on the application.

*$10.00 for a certified copy

It is the responsibility of the person performing the ceremony.(Justice of the Peace, Minister, Priest, etc.)to complete numbers 56 to 61 and file the marriage/civil union license with the Town Clerk’s Office in which the ceremony took place.
Certified copies can be obtained from the Town Clerk’s Office when the license is filed. The fee for copies is $5.00 per certified copy.
